Lagos State University students today went on the rampage disrupting the university’s second semester examination, destroying properties in the process and even stoning their University Vice Chancellor Prof. John Obafunwa as he made to escape their wrath.

Trouble started in the university when their VC decided not to open the registration portal for over

2,000 students who were yet to register their second semester courses as exams was to begin Thursday.
According to the students, only 708 were able to register before the portal was shut again leaving,
1292 students to their fate.

When the students union government went to plead on behalf of the students, the VC was reported as saying those yet to register are insignificant and would automatically have to carry the session over, a statement which infuriated the students and they decided to take laws into their hands.

They started a riot, destroyed properties in the school and threw sticks and stones at the Vice Chancellor’s convoy as he made to escape through an alternative route beside Conoil Filling station.

The editor-in-chief of Garage magazine, Dasha Zhukova, has apologized for releasing a photo of her sitting on a chair made to look like a half-naked black woman, on Martin Luther King Day.
A fashion website, Buro 24/7, used the offensive image of Zhukova to illustrate an unrelated interview about the ex-model’s new magazine, Garage.
The picture which has sparked outrage among people who viewed it as racist, was posted as America celebrated a national holiday to remember civil rights leader, King, on Monday.

“The chair pictured in the Buro 24/7 website interview is an artwork created by Norwegian artist Bjarne Melgaard, one of a series that reinterprets art historical works from artist Allen Jones as a commentary on gender and racial politics. Its use in this photo shoot is regrettable as it took the artwork totally out of its intended context, particularly given that Buro 24/7′s release of the article coincided with the important celebration of the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.I regret allowing an artwork with such charged meaning to be used in this context. I utterly abhor racism and would like to apologize to those offended by my participation in this shoot.

The online magazine Buro 247 has published a story about Dasha Zhukova, the Russian editor-in-chief of Garage magazine, which shows the editrix perched atop a chair designed to look like a half-naked black woman. Ugh.
Note: the image has since been cropped on the website to only show Zhukova and not the chair. We have reached out to Miroslava Duma the editor of Buro 247 for comment.
Claire Sulmers, the editor of FashionBombDaily.com, alerted us to the unfortunate feature and calls the image an example of “white dominance and superiority, articulated in a seemingly serene yet overtly degrading way.”
We couldn’t agree more. Although the chair also comes in “white woman,” we can’t help but be filled with anger and frustration over the onslaught of negative imagery, constant disregard and unabashed bigotry that continues to plague the fashion industry. From Bethann Hardison’s crusade to end racism on the runway to ourattempt to educate society over and over and over again about the nonsense that is Blackface – the stories of racially insensitive absurdity are never ending.
Sulmers goes on to point out that the chair appears to be inspired by a collection designed by British pop artist Allen Jones in 1969. Yet this specific use of a black woman’s figure strikes a deeper cord. “The art and fashion industries are the few bastions of society where blatant racism and ignorance are given the greenlight in the name of creativity,” Sulmers writes.
Well it certainly seems that way, and this Buro 24/7 editorial is just another layer of icing on the cake.

Tragedy:APC Leader Killed By Robbers In Lagos

Tragedy struck at Kelani Street off Adealu Street at Dopemu in Agege Local Government Area of Lagos State, southwest Nigeria early Sunday morning when dare devil armed robbers stormed the area and left death, tears and anguish on their trail.

 

After about an hour operation, the ex-Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) which defected into the All Progressives Congress (APC), Engineer Akeem Arowolo Jimoh, was killed by the rampaging robbers.

Thegazellenews.com learnt that the politician, well known in the area, was killed because when the robbers stormed his residence, he had no money to give them.

His residence was reportedly ransacked by the robbers but when they did not found anything in the house, they shot him at close range. He died instantly.

The robbers raided eight other houses in the area leaving many people injured.

The late Hakeem has since been buried in accordance with Islamic injunctions. He was survived by an aged mother, a wife and two children. Before his death, he was running a dry-cleaning business at Sebiotimo Street, Agege. He was a graduate of Electrical Engineering from the Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, Kwara State, north central Nigeria.

The deceased was a native of Ojoku in Oyun Local Government Area of Kwara State, north central Nigeria.Source

Billionaire War: Otudeko Fights Dangote Over Land

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, western Nigeria has adjourned till 6 February for hearing in the suit instituted by Oba Otudeko’s company, Honeywell Group, over 10.841 square metres of land within the Lagos Ports Complex against the Dangote Group.

Joined in the suit are the Nigerian Ports Authority, the Bureau of Public Enterprises, Aliko Dangote and Greenview Development Nigeria, a company related to Dangote.

Honeywell Group alleged that NPA leased the land to it for five years for the purpose of setting up bulk facilities.

It also said  N2.168 million was paid, but suddenly the agreement was suspended and the land was re-allocated to Greenview Development Company while Honeywell was ordered to vacate the land.

Honeywell Group alleged that Dangote and his group had lured the NPA to transfer the land to it.

Honeywell is urging the court to declare it as a legal occupier while demanding damages of $48 million.

Dangote is insisting that the agreement was neither turned into deed nor was it registered in any land registry.

His Group is also claiming that presidential consent was not obtained before the lease agreement was granted to Honeywell and as part of the privatisation policy of the Federal Government, notices were given to the public in 2003 for the consessioning of all lands in the Nigerian Ports complexes by the  Bureau of Public Enterprises, BPE.

Dangote and his group have asked the court to dismiss the case.

Anti-Amaechi Protests Paralyse Port Harcourt, Airport and Oil Installations Under Threat of Being Blocked (PHOTO)

Hundreds of men, women and youths drawn from four Ikwerre speaking local government areas of Emohua, Obio Akpor, Port Harcourt city and Ikwerre of Rivers State have barricaded the ever busy Aba/Port Harcourt road, thereby causing serious traffic grid lock in major streets of Port Harcourt, in the morning of January 21, 2014, Tuesday.


The protesters comprising youths, young and elderly men and women barricaded the popular G.R.A. junction of Port Harcourt, a development that made motorists to spend more than two hours on a grid lock which spanned up to the Isaac Boro park.
The protesters were carrying placards which bore inscriptions such as “We will not stand by impunity, leave Mbu alone”, “International Airport will be shut down if Mbu leaves Rivers State”, “I.G. thanks for giving us Mbu”, “South South man cannot betray his brother, we love Jonathan”, “Jonathan will come in 2015”.
These crowds were guarded by the team of anti riot policemen led by a chief Superintendent of police, David Osuani.
The protesters who took over the entire stretch of Aba/Port Harcourt road up to NDDC secretariat sang solidarity songs in praise of President Goodluck Jonathan, the supervising Minster of Education, Nyesom Wike and Rivers State commissioner of police, Joseph Mbu.

The Chairman of Ikwerre people’s Assembly and the spokesman of the protesters Barrister Chima Bombs said the people of Ikwerre ethnic Nationality decided to go on a street protest to condemn the continuing attack on the office and person of President Goodluck Jonathan, the Minster of Education and the State commissioner of police by those he described as disgruntled and frustrated politicians.

“Rivers people and indeed Nigerians would recall that prior to the assumption of the commissioner of police, Joseph Mbu, in Rivers State, indiscriminate arrest and illegal detention, harassment and intimidation, revocation of C of Os, compulsory acquisition without compensation and demolition of properties without notice to persons who held and expressed contrary views to that of Amaechi led administration was the order of the day”.
“The resumption of CP Mbu as commissioner of police , Rivers State effectively put to an end the reign of impunity , lawlessness , harassment and the abuse of the fundamental rights of the citizens by Gov Amaechi. CP Mbu since assumption of office has demonstrated and exhibited an uncanny zeal , dexterity and enthusiasm in the art of policing the State , hence the peaceful and serene atmosphere pervasive today in the State which ironically and indeed inexplicably does not go down well with the Governor,” he said.

Bar. Chima Bombs condemned what he called “the theatrics and antics of Senator Magnus Abe and his gang of brigandage”, which he said was orchestrated to achieve “his inordinate ambition to emerge as Governorship candidate for the APC”.
He threatened that the people of Ikwerri ethnic Nationality will resist any attempt to redeploy the commissioner of police adding that “any redeployment of CP Mbu at this time will be asking for the total shut down of all entry points to Rivers State including the international airport which the Ikwerre people play host to and all the oil wells, flow stations and facilities operations in our land”.

Breaking: Jonathan Appoints Bamanga Tukur As Nigeria Railway Corporation Chairman - PREMIUM TIMES

 

                   

President Goodluck Jonathan has appointed the immediate past National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Bamanga Tukur, as Chairman of the Board of the Nigerian Railway Corporation.
Mr. Tukur last week resigned his position as National Chairman of the PDP. He has since been replaced with ex-Bauchi governor, Adamu Muazu.
Mr. Tukur’s appointment as Railway Corporation, NRC, chairman was announced in a statement by the Special Assistant (Media) to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sam Nwaobasi.
The position of NRC chairman was formerly held by Kawu Baraje, the former factional chairman of the PDP who has since led his faction to fuse into the All Progressives Congress. Mr. Baraje resigned in the height of the PDP crisis in late 2013.
Mr. Jonathan, according to the statement, has also approved the appointment of Ghaji Ismaila Bello as Director-General of the National Population Commission with effect from January 8, 2014.
According to its enabling law, the Nigeria Railway Corporation is charged with facilitating effective “carriage of passengers and goods in a manner that will offer full value for money; meet cost of operation; improve market share and quality of services; ensure safety of operations and maximum efficiency; meet social responsibility in a manner that will meet the requirements of rail users, trade, commerce, industry and general public”.
President Jonathan had after announcing Mr. Tukur’s resignation as PDP chairman at the National Executive Committee meeting of the party, on January 16, hinted that he would reward the former party chief with another appointment.
“He (Mr. Tukur) is not guilty of any offence and I am going to give him an assignment that is tougher than PDP chairman,” the president said at that event.
President Jonathan is currently away in Davos, Switzerland for the World Economic Forum.

Smoking In Public To Attract 6-Month Jail Term In Lagos

The Lagos State House of Assembly, yesterday, passed a bill, aimed at banning smoking in public places in the
state. This came after several months of deliberation and public engagement, mainly to sensitise and gather residents’ opinions on the bill. The 16-section bill, said that posting of signs which
states “no smoking,” with a picture depicting a burning cigarette enclosed in a circle with a bar across, should
be displayed in all “no smoking areas.”
The assembly noted that the picture depicting ban of smoking in a particular public place would be prominently posted and properly maintained by the
owner, occupier or person in charge of the “no smoking areas. ”The bill, which, yesterday, scaled through the third
reading, prohibited anybody smoking in all public places including libraries, museum, public toilets, schools, hospital, day care centres, public
transportation and restaurants, among others. The assembly proceeding which was presided over by the Speaker, Mr. Adeyemi Ikuforiji, said smoking in
public places would attract penalties ranging from three month imprisonment to six month jail term. It said the bill “has been sent to Governor Babatunde
Fashola  for an assent,” even though the development had attracted public outrage, citing infraction on fundamental human rights. Section 4 of the bill said it shall be the duty of those who own or occupy public places to ensure that
approved “no smoking” signs are displayed conspicuously at each entrance and in prominent locations throughout the premises. The bill on no smoking in public places, also stated the
penalties for smoking in a “no smoking area” will be N10,000 fine or imprisonment for a term not less than
one month and not exceeding three months or both. While any person who repeatedly violates the provisions shall on conviction be liable to a fine of
N50, 000 or six month imprisonment or both. The law also states the penalty for non compliance by owner/occupier of a “no smoking area” the offenders
shall attract N100, 000 or 6 month imprisonment, or other non custodial punishment that the judge may
deem fit. It shall be an offense to obstruct a duly authorised officer from carrying out his duties under the provision of this law. The law states that any person who smokes in the presence of a child commits an offence and shall be liable on conviction to a fine of N15,000 or imprisonment for a month or both.
