Our Electricity Bills Higher Than House Rent ─ Residents in Lagos State

Residents of the Apapa-Iganmu and the Ifelodun local council development areas of Lagos State on Friday marched in protest to the Eko Electricity Distribution Company in Ijora-Badia over what they described as crazy bills served by the company on them.

The residents told Punch that their electricity bills were higher than their house rents. The residents displayed placards and sang solidarity songs to the distribution company, demanding an explanation from the authorities on why such bills should be given to them.

The protesters, who marched from Amusu Street, went through the Gaskiya Road, calling on shop owners and other stakeholders to join them.

One of the residents, Kamoru Wole, said some tenants paid as much as N5,000 as electricity bill on a monthly basis, which was higher than the house rent which was N1,500 per month. He said,
“Badia and Amukoko are low-profile populated areas, and we paid as low as N1,500 for rent. It is a residential area with just a few people engaging in petty commercial activities. Yet, this is an area where the electricity per room is as high as N5,000.
“This is robbery by workers of the distribution company. Our electricity bills are higher than our house rents. We do not use air-conditioners; so where did the company get the high bills?”

The residents, who read a protest letter on the distribution company premises, urged the management to address the anomalies in the bills to prevent
“crises when the company workers would be sharing the next bills”.

The letter reads in part,
“The residents of these communities register our displeasure over the abnormal and arbitrary bill given to us a monthly basis by the distribution company in the Badia sub-station.
“We cry for the intervention of the management because our persistent appeals have fallen on the deaf ears of the junior workers. They have taken us for a ride simply because they consider us as some of the lowly placed in the society.
“This act is inhuman and condemnable. It has become the habit of the workers of the distribution company to increase the electricity bills of residents on a monthly basis without any justification.”

One of the landlords, identified only as Adedayo, said the distribution company should cancel all the past debts of the residents. He said,
“The pre-paid meters should also be supplied en mass to curb the menace of crazy billings.”

An official of the distribution company, who identified himself as N.A. Adebayo, assured the residents that their demands would be looked into. He said,
“The management is going to look into your demands. We will get back to you soon.”

I Murdered My Father for Scolding Me After I Smoked Four Wraps of Indian Hemp ─ Son

Thirty-five-year-old Nelson, who stabbed his father, Sunday Oamen, to death, in Abesan Estate, in the Ipaja area of Lagos State, has said he did it because his father always scolded him. Oamen, who is currently being detained at the State Department of Criminal Investigation, Yaba, told Punch on Wednesday that he had smoked four wraps of Indian hemp before committing the crime.

He faulted his parents for not giving him enough training, adding that he hated them for always talking down on him. Our correspondent had reported last week Monday that Nelson, a suspected drug addict, stabbed his 75-year-old father to death on Friday, September 23.

It was reported that the deceased, a retired worker in a company in the Apapa area of the state, was battling with stroke and always stayed indoors at the time of the incident. Nelson was reported to have sneaked into the house and stabbed his father to death with a broken bottle.

He was said to have covered his corpse with a blanket and fled the house. Residents told our correspondent that the suspect, who always fomented trouble in the community, escaped with the heart of his father. On Wednesday, our correspondent reported that the suspect voluntarily turned himself in to the police.

During a chat with PUNCH Metro, Nelson said he surrendered himself to the police because he lost his peace after killing his father. The Edo State indigene said he had always fought with his father before things went awry on the fateful day. He said,
“I am the fourth child in a family of eight children. I have had several fights with my dad in the past. There was a time I confronted him that I had been going through a lot of challenges in life and I needed help, but he said I should sit at home and he would be feeding me. I was angry because he wanted me to be dependent on him and I needed to fend for myself.
“My parents knew that I smoke hemp and it sometimes affected my behaviour. They asked me to quit it, and I did for some time. People advised them to take me for medical care, but they said they did not have the money.
“I became addicted to hemp about six months ago. On Thursday night, a day preceding the incident, I had gone to a joint where I smoked four wraps of hemp. I bought each for N50.
“On Friday, around 11am, I was sitting outside the house when I started feeling restless and a spirit told me to go inside and kill my father. I went in through the window and when I got to where he was lying, I stabbed him in the neck and chest.”

He said after committing the act, he ran away because he was overcome with guilt. Nelson, who dropped out of primary school, denied removing his father’s heart, adding that after killing his father, his eyes became opened.
“The spirit that pushed me to kill my father began to tell me that I will not have rest until I report myself to the police. When I could no longer bear it, I decided to report to the police.
“It is not my fault. Whenever I talk to my parents, they always scolded me. And sometimes, I felt they were not my parents. I killed my father because he always chastised me and because I lost control of my senses.
“If I get out of this mess, I will surrender my life to Jesus. But if not, I resign myself to fate,” he added.

Our correspondent learnt that the police would soon charge the suspect to court for the offence.
But a police source said the suspect’s family was becoming hesitant in giving their full support to the prosecution. He said,
“Some members of the family want him to face the consequence of his action, but they are also considering the implication on their mother who had become old and might not want to suffer double tragedies.
“However, the police will prosecute him. It is a straightforward murder case.”

A Military man achieved what you could not, Sylva mocks Oshiomhole

Oshio
Newly-elected flag-bearer of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the December 5 Governorship Election in Bayelsa State, Chief Timipre Sylva has berated the Edo state governor, Adams Oshiomhole for failing to conduct a peaceful and credible primary election of the party.
Sylva who spoke shortly after he was declared winner of the primary said, “It’s been a long walk and I am very happy today to accept the victory that you have given to me for the second time. This is only the beginning of the journey. Today I have seen that we politicians have a lot to learn from the military, what a serving Governor of Edo state of this country was incapable of doing just just a few days ago has been achieved by a retired general and his team.
“This tells you that we have a lot to learn about the military. I want to thank the security agencies that have been present since yesterday night until now and have kept the peace and make sure that this primary are rancour free,” he stated.
It will be recalled that Oshiomhole had berated Sylva for allegedly truncating the electoral process during an earlier APC governorship primaries in the state while Sylva described Oshiomhole’s words as a deliberate “act of mischief” and “lies”.
Shortly after that disputed election, the National Working Committee, NWC, of the APC replaced the Edo State Governor with Brig-Gen. Mansur Dan Ali (retd.) as Chairman of the Bayelsa gubernatorial primary election committee.
