Nigerian student jailed in the UK for cheating 6 women out of £186k

Covenant University graduate Stephen Emmanuel Jack, who now studies in the UK, has been jailed for 3 years for seducing six women on dating websites and cheating them out of £186,000, according to a report by UK Mirror. Find the report below...

    A lonely hearts conman was jailed for three years after cheating six women out of £186,000 through dating websites. Police believe student Emmanuel Jack, 26, claimed to be an architect, engineer and gem broker, while talking them into handing over the money.

    Using aliases including John Creed, John Windsor and Johnnie Carlo Rissi, the cash was said to be needed for vbusiness purposes.

    The love rat, who was studying for a business degree at the University of Salford, admitted 11 counts of money laundering totalling £186,000 and possession of articles for use in fraud at Manchester Crown Court.

Two of the women who were conned are British.

Detective Constable Stuart Donohue said: “While we strongly suspect - but cannot prove - that Jack was the person who was communicating with these women, what we can prove is that money totalling close to £277,000 has been transferred through his bank accounts
“Woman from across the globe were targeted and exploited. Women, who in most cases were vulnerable and lonely.
"Some took out loans, others lost life savings, they believed they were speaking with a man who had genuine feelings for them, a man who loved them and wanted to be with them and who they genuinely believed to be a soul mate.”

The first victim met a man who claimed to be John Creed - a self-employed architect and building contractor on a dating website in August 2011 when she was aged 61.

The pair exchanged e-mails over several days before Creed began expressing his love.
He then claimed to have two contracts: one for log homes in Shropshire and the other for the renovation of flats in Sweden and sent her his contract allegedly worth £950,000.
He told her his feelings were “too strong to ignore” before asking for £1,500 to help pay for supplies for his project. She agreed to transfer some funds to the account.

At the same time another woman who was aged 52 at the time and who was vulnerable, began chatting with a man over the same website.
The man claimed to be living in Spain and working as an architect and building contractor.
After a couple of weeks he again asked for £1,500 to repair damaged machinery and cash to pay tax bills and money to pay his workers.
The woman took out a loan and paid the money to accounts that resulted in the money being transferred to Jack’s account.

Following the reports from the two women, an investigation was launched by fraud officers from Greater Manchester Police.
Officers linked up with with Kentucky state police who took a statement from a woman, who died in August 2013. She said she met a man with the profile name John Windsor through another dating site around January 2012.

Windsor told her he was an engineer who had been awarded a contract to redevelop Wick Airport runway in Scotland. The funds were sent to bank accounts by money transfers and in the form of Rolex watches through the post.

Officers also liaised with Delta police in relation to a victim from Ohio.
She met a man who called himself John or Johnnie Carlo Rissi who was from America but had moved to England to set up as a gem broker he requested money to help with a tax issue and for assistance with payroll, along with various other excuses. Nine transfers totalling £18,924 were sent.
A Proceeds of Crime Act hearing is scheduled to take place on May 16.

HORRIBLE: Brothers Kill Brother Over Their Father’s House [Graphic Photos]

Three brothers in Satellite Town, Fatia, Sakiru and Tunji Osun, have killed their brother, Yusuf, over the house that
their father left when he died. According to witnesses, their father willed the house to Yusuf, who wasn’t the eldest, but the eldest, Fatia decided to sell the house for N15m, take N10m and give his brothers N5m to share. Yusuf did not
agree, and the rest, is history.

Three brothers have been arrested by the police in connection with the murder of their blood brother. Fatia Osun (31), Sakiru Osun (20) and their step-brother,
Tunji (34), were accused of killing Yusuf Osun (27) over N15 million which was to be realized from the sale of a house left behind by their late father. The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday,
Feb. 27, at Kano street in Mobile Estate, Satellite Town, Lagos and left residents of the estate and its environs jittery.
Fatia Osun, who is a Muslim cleric and is popularly known and referred to as an “Alfa”, is alleged to have connived
with his younger brother Sakiru, to kill Yusuf so that they would share the entire amount. The late Yusuf Osun was
strangled with a 2.5mm wire by Fatia while his other brothers stabbed him.
After the murder, the half brother of the perpetrators and the deceased, Tunji, sent a text message to a neighbour, tellinghim that Yusuf had passed away. He informed the neighbour that Yusuf had gotten drunk, slipped in the bathroom and hit his head. However, his story was suspect because Yusuf was a
known teetotaller, and suspicious neighbours came to the house and found Yusuf’s body with all the wounds. They alleged that Tunji assisted his brothers in moving Yusuf’s body to the bathroom and cleaning out the sitting room, where the incident had occurred.
At this point, the crowd turned into a mob, and beat up the brothers before informing the police who promptly arrested the brothers. The genesis
According to neighbours, their late father had willed the house to Yusuf because of long lasting disagreements that he had with Fatia, the eldest over his lifestyle. But, said neighbours also claimed that the men’s father failed to
leave a written will behind. After the death of their parents, Alfa proposed the sale of the house to his brothers but the late Yusuf objected to the sale of the property which was valued at
N 15 million. Yusuf instead suggested that they rent the house out and move to the boys-quarters because to him,
the house was their only hope for long term survival. His refusal led to a disagreement between with his brothers,
which resulted in a bloody fight. It was alleged that in that fighting, his brother, Fatia, stabbed him six times. Yusuf
however survived this fight and was admitted to hospital where he recovered after spending almost 3 weeks.
Upon his release from the hospital, Yusuf apparently accepted to sell the house and divide the money as his
brothers wanted, so the house was put up for sale. Eventually, a buyer showed interest and offered N 15 million.
Upon reaching an agreement with the prospective buyer, the eldest, Fatia, informed his brothers that he was entitled to N 10 million of the money, while they would have to make do
with N 5 million amongst themselves.
The neighbours said that Yusuf had the previous night asked people to lend him N 1,000 to go out since he wasn’t
comfortable sleeping in their home.
Neighbours react When a TelegraphNG correspondent visited the neighbourhood, the residents were all still in shock. A neighbour who pleaded anonymity, said he was surprised that Alfa could carry out such a dastardly act adding that she never imagined that such a thing will happen in their estate.
“That means, his going to mosque and the whole Alfa thing is all camouflage, we all need to be wary about people
around us, how can someone be so inhuman and callous to kill another person not to talk of killing his own brother over worldly things”.
A neighbour, Yinka Adewale, said one of the accused and the most senior (Fatia) was also responsible for the death of
their late father. “His plan was to sell the house long time ago, the death of his brother is not surprising to me because his father died mysteriously, so did his mother. He was taking out all those
that seemed like a stumbling block to him,” Yinka said. “Something of this nature has never happened nor heard of
within this vicinity, Mobile Estate is a peace place to live. Its a sad event, I don’t even want to talk about it again. Its
just so painful” another resident lament.
Confession
During interrogation, Sakiru, one of the accused who is also the youngest in the family, said his elder brother promised
to send him abroad so he can have a good life if he took part in eliminating their brother, Yusuf. Investigations are currently ongoing at the Area E command
Police station, Lagos and will be transferred to the Panti police station Yaba for further investigation.

Protest over Lagos pedophile pastor accused of sexually abusing children

The peace of Akute, Ogun State was disrupted by aggrieved non-governmental organizations, NGOs, and women protesting the relocation of an orphanage allegedly being run by a pastor standing trial on a four-count charge of sexual abuse.

The protesters, led by Josephine Effah-Chukwuma, Executive Director, Project Alert, and Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin, founder, Women Arise, were, mostly, lawyers, child right and women activists.  They stormed Akute-Ijoko Road at about 12 noon displaying placards with inscriptions: “Say no to child abuse”, “This pastor is a pedophile”, “Orphanage or child abuse center”, “Justice for sexually-abused children”, among others. The protesters lamented that the founder of the orphanage had gone ahead to relocate it when he had not been cleared of the case of sexual abuse hanging on his head.

The protest was prompted by a text message about the relocation of the orphanage allegedly sent by the pastor.  The text message read: “RELOCATION OF ORPHANAGE – Beloved, come rejoice with us as we celebrate God’s faithfulness in thanksgiving and dedication of the new place God appointed us at Akute-Ijoko Road on Saturday February 22, 2014, at 11am. Please pray and plan to attend. God bless you.”

The protesters alleged that the orphanage is a killer and “the people of this vicinity must know because we can’t keep allowing these abuses to go on”. They went on: “This place must be closed down. We will not keep quiet and allow a pedophile to truncate the future of our children.

All the children in this center are the future of Nigeria and if they are being raped by the pastor,  it means that Nigeria has no future. We are also calling on the government of Ogun State and the people of Nigeria to make sure that he is brought to book. Every responsible Nigerian must ensure that the pastor is brought to book.”

They questioned Ogun State government on why the orphanage remained in operation and why the pastor was becoming more courageous to the extent of opening another orphanage under the watch of the state. “Ogun State has not shut down the orphanage in spite of the fact that the founder has a  four- count charge of sexual abuse still hanging over his head. Until the law takes it’s course, until he is acquitted and the court of law declares him innocent, this orphanage should be closed down.”

Speaking during the protest,  Okei-Odumakin noted that the pastor was relocating his orphanage from Akute because he is running away from the negative publicity he got as a result of the alleged sexual abuse of the girls at the orphanage.

“Investigations revealed that despite the fact that the Ogun State Ministry of Women Affairs instructed the pastor to stay away from the orphanage, he still frequents the orphanage. What system did Ogun State put in place to monitor and ensure that the pastor does not go to that orphanage?”

Josphine Effah- Chukwuma, Executive Director, Project Alert, said that Ogun State Government and the Ministry of Women Affairs have returned the two girls that cried out that the pastor was sexually abusing them to the orphanage. “Does it take a wizard or a blind person to know that you don’t return victims of a crime to crime site? Imagine those two under-aged girls returned to the orphanage on the grounds that they signed an undertaking that they wanted to go back. According to the laws in Nigeria, as long as they are under 18, you are not an adult, you don’t have the right to decide for yourself.”

The protesters demanded that the orphanage be closed until the suspect is acquitted by the court of law.
Although the pastor was not around, a jeep, reportedly owned by him, was parked inside the compound.  Building work was apparently on- going at the site while hired chairs, a cake for the event and visitors trooped in for the event.

Not sealed
According to one of the invited guests, one Mrs Olagbemi, “I  received a text message through my phone that the orphanage was relocating. I have known the pastor for about eight years now. Because I run a Bible club and children Evangelism Ministry, I usually visit the orphanage to give them what we have for the children. And we have been doing this for seven years. I am not aware that the first home was sealed by government because of alleged sexual abuse of children.”

Further investigation also revealed that the orphanage at Akute remained in operation with more than 26 children.

The corpse of a young woman was found at a welding workshop along Upper Adesuwa road in the early hours of today. Passersby said the dead young woman probably on her way to a vigil must have been raped to death.
As at the time of this report the identity of the lady in question was yet to be known,even as the police were contacted in respect of the incident. 

The Few People Who Control Nigeria’s Economy

About 12 Nigerians currently control one-eighth (1/8) of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP), a survey conducted by LEADERSHIP Weekend has revealed.  In the same way, the 10 most capitalised companies listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) make up over one-fifth of the country’s economy with many of the major shareholders drawn from the ranks of the 10 richest Nigerians.

An analysis of the Forbes 50 Richest Africans’ List indicates that the 12 Nigerians listed therein currently have an estimated total net-worth of $33.68 billion (N5.38 trillion) which represents 12.8 per cent or about one-eighth of Nigeria’s GDP figure put at $262.6 billion (N42 trillion) as at December 2012.

The 10 most capitalised companies, on the other hand, together are valued N9.35trn ($58bn). Curiously, LEADERSHIP Weekend investigation shows that none of the top 10 capitalised companies is an oil company, since oil exploration and drilling companies are not quoted on the NSE. It is estimated that more than half of the country’s 12 wealthiest individuals made their money and are still making money from the oil industry. 

However, with the envisaged rebasing of Nigeria’s GDP, it is expected that the country’s GDP figure will increase, thus resulting in a drop in the percentage of the nation’s economy controlled by these individuals and companies.

According to the Forbes African 50 Richest list released in November 2013, Aliko Dangote is Africa’s richest man with a net worth of $20.8 billion. This shows that Dangote alone controls about 8 per cent of the nation’s GDP while the remaining 11 people control only 4.8 per cent of the GDP.

But Dangote could see his share of the country’s wealth reduced to about 5 per cent after the base year for measuring the size of the economy is brought forward from the 1990s to better reflect companies that have sprung up in the last two decades. Economists expect the National Bureau of Statistics to put the GDP at around $400bn when NBS finally comes out with a figure.

One of Dangote’s companies, Dangote Cement,  also comes tops as the most capitalised company with a market value of N3.92 trillion ($24.5bn), giving it close to 10 per cent of the GDP or about 6.25 per cent after rebasing.

As a subsidiary of the Dangote Group, the cement company got listed on the NSE in October 2010. The company announced a gross revenue of N103.03 billion with a profit of N54 billion as at September 30, 2013.

Telecom, banking and oil investor Mike Adenuga ranks fifth on the Forbes Africa Rich List and second in Nigeria with a net worth of $4.6 billion. This gives him 1 per cent

None of his companies, however, is on the top 10 of the most capitalised on the stock exchange with Globacom, his telecommunication company, the only major one that is completely privately owned and not listed on the exchange. The 61-year-old who hails from Ijebu, Ogun State, built his fortune in oil production and telecoms.

His mobile telecom outfit, Globacom, has over 25 million subscribers in Nigeria and the Republic of Benin. He also owns Conoil Producing, a large indigenous oil exploration company.

Folorunsho Alakija

Having beaten Oprah Winfrey to be the richest black woman, Folorunsho Alakija, became Nigeria’s first female billionaire and the 13th richest African, thanks to a lucrative oil-producing asset with a total net worth of $2.5 billion. This oil giant contributes roughly 0.95 per cent to the GDP which could come to roughly 0.625 per cent when the NBS announces its new GDP figures.

Abdulsamad Rabiu

After working as a secretary in a Nigerian merchant bank in the 1970s, Alakija quit her job to study fashion designing in England. She subsequently founded Supreme Stitches, a Nigerian fashion label that caters to upscale clientele, including Maryam Babangida, the late wife to Nigeria’s former military president, Ibrahim Babangida. The president awarded her company, Famfa Oil, an oil prospecting licence, OML 127, one of Nigeria’s most prolific oil blocks.Abdulsamad Rabiu joins the ranks of Africa’s richest and the world’s billionaires for the first time based on success at his BUA Group, whose biggest businesses are sugar refining and cement. BUA Group’s annual revenues are estimated at $2 billion. The group also does business in real estate, steel, port concessions, manufacturing, oil and gas and shipping.

After calculating Rabiu’s worth, Forbes magazine said his “stake in his commodities and cement empire, plus his real estate holdings in South Africa and London, are worth $1.2 billion, up from $670 million a year ago, primarily due to better information on Rabiu’s holdings and the revenue of his companies.” While not all his investments are traced to Nigeria, with $1.2bn to his name, Rabiu gets to have a say in how the country’s economy is managed, at least a 0.45 per cent and maybe 0.3 per cent after rebasing.

Jim Ovia

Delta State-born Nigerian banker Jim Ovia ranks the 28th richest African and fifth richest Nigerian. He founded the Zenith Bank Group, one of Nigeria’s largest financial services groups, with a market capitalisation of more than $4.5 billion (N728.4bn).

With a net worth of $900 million, Ovia is Zenith bank’s largest individual shareholder, with a 9 per cent stake. This gives Ovia a 0.34 per cent share of the current GDP and about 0.225 per cent of the expected figure. The bank on the other hand has a 1.72 per cent share of $262bn official GDP figure and could come down to 1.125 per cent after rebasing.

Ovia owns dozens of prime properties in pricey Nigerian neighbourhoods like Victoria Island and Ikoyi. Ovia also runs Visafone, a mobile telecoms outfit, and is partnering with Marriott to build a new five-star hotel in Lagos.

Theophilus Danjuma

Retired Nigerian general and former defence minister Theophilus Danjuma ranks the sixth richest in Nigeria and 29th in Africa with a net worth of $700 million. His share of GDP stands at 0.267 per cent and could later become 0.175 per cent. He chairs South Atlantic Petroleum (Sapetro), a Nigeria-based upstream oil and gas exploration and production company which was awarded an oil block (OML 130) by the Sani Abacha regime in the 1990s, and in 2006 Danjuma sold a 45 per cent stake to Chinese oil company CNOOC for $1.75 billion, retaining a 5 per cent stake. In 2011, Danjuma said he had $500 million left from selling the block to CNOOC. He donated it to the TY Danjuma Foundation, a philanthropic organisation that is catering to educational, health and microcredits causes for the downtrodden. Danjuma also owns real estate in Lagos, including SAPETRO Towers.

Oba Otudeko

Oba Otuddeko, industrialist and former president of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, who chairs Nigeria’s Honeywell Group, with interests in oil and gas, flour milling, real estate and marine transportation, is next after Danjuma on the Nigerian list but ranks 33rd richest in Africa with a net worth of $575 million. Honeywell Flour is publicly traded. He also owns a minority stake in mobile phone giant Bharti Airtel’s Nigerian operations, and a stake in Radisson Blu, a sprawling oceanfront hotel in Lagos, Nigeria.

Hakeem Belo-Osagi

Hakeem Belo-Osagie and Mohammed Indimi both share the 34th position with a Tanzanian with a net worth of $550 million.

Belo-Osagie is the chairman and a significant shareholder of the Nigerian operations of United Arab Emirates-based telecom provider Etisalat, Nigeria’s fastest growing mobile telecom network, with a subscriber base of 17 million, up from six million three years ago. Etisalat’s growth is the catalyst for Belo-Osagie’s increased fortune, up by $150 million from a year ago. He now controls 0.21 per cent of the economy.

Mohammed Indimi

Mohammed Indimi, chairman of Oriental Energy Resources, a private Nigerian oil exploration and production company, has a net worth of $550 million. His contribution to GDP could be as much 0.13 per cent after NBS announces its estimates of the country’s GDP. Oriental, which Indimi founded in 1990, has three projects in the offshore Nigerian oil and gas industry, including the Ebok Field, which produces 35,000 barrels a day. It shares ownership of the projects with U.K.-listed oil exploration company Afren Plc. The Ebok Field was awarded to Oriental Energy Resources in 2007 by a joint venture between Exxon-Mobil and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.

Sani Bello

The 10th richest Nigerian who ranks 38 on the African list with a net worth of $500 million is Sani Bello, who is the founder of Amni International Petroleum Development Company, an oil exploration company with a 50 per cent interest in the Okoro Setu oil field, located in shallow waters offshore Nigeria. With half a billion dollars to his name, he contributes 0.19 per cent of GDP which could later be revised to 0.125 per cent.

Amni shares ownership of the Okoro Setu field with London-listed exploration firm Afren; production averages 18,200 barrels a day. Bello is also a minority stakeholder in mobile telecom firm MTN Nigeria. He is a former Nigerian military governor from Kano State and a one-time ambassador to Zimbabwe. His Sani Bello Foundation provides small loans and grants to young Nigerian entrepreneurs.

Femi Otedola

The other two are Femi Otedola and Tunde Folawiyo with net worth of $410 million and $400 million respectively.
